lovely deal

I'm getting a 91 MR2 n/a 167000 mi in a good shape from my uncle for $500. The car was sitting in his driveway for 1 ear. I scared to start it before changing a timing belt( sins hi don't even know what is that, hi never did it) Should I worried about snapping the belt if I drive as is for about 60mi? And if it snaps, is it going to damage the motor(pistons, valves)? Tnx!
P.S. Search engine have nothing...

The MR2 has a non intrusive engine, so it doesn't matter if you snap the timing belt. The only thing you have to worrry about is getting stranded..

no, the ppl who are qualified to answer you questions do not have anything against new members. there could be many reasons why no one has responded to you questions yet. It's the weekend for one. and the title of your thread is kinda misleading too.
but in response, the timing belt should be changed at about 75k miles. If it's the original, it's wayyy past time and it sitting for a year may have made the belt dry and brittle. have you started it?

getting a second opinion is always good.
definately change the oil, do a visual inspection of the hoses, vacuum lines, belts, plug wires and coolant. and the obvious-tires and pressure....good luck

[threadjack]Just a suggestion. There are a few things you can focus on to maximise the amount of good responses your threads bring. Concise explanations of what you're looking for with good spelling and grammar make your threads much easier to read. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that has skipped threads altogether because they were too much work to read. Coming off with attitude because you don't get what you're looking for fast enough is a sure way to chase away good information.[/threadjack]

What you're trying to ask is whether the 5sfe is an interference engine or not. Just in case you aren't sure what that means; an interference engine is one where the valves are capable of extending beyond the tops of the piston heads when the heads are as high as they can go. If a timing belt breaks on an interference engine it can cause the pistons to slam into the valves and bend them. The 5sfe engine is non-interference so the worst you have to worry about is your car becoming non-functional before you get home.

Sorry for bad spelling and grammar. I do what I can to make my threads easier to read for you my friend. I'm not American, if you did not figure it out by now. This is "TOYOTA NATION" forum, so if you have a hard time to read threads like this one, make shore you skip it . I ask a simple question and don't need 12 lines answer, it is hard to read all this and it all means NO IT WILL NOT DAMAGE YOUR ENGINE!
As i said NOT TO BE RUDE , I meant it and please remember not to answer to my further threads, because I'm willing to give some updates and maybe have some more questions for the others , who MR Fan not a god of grammar and spelling. Have a good day now
P.S. check your spellings----->maximise maximize!!! GO TO SCHOOL BOY

Per dictionary.com:

maximise

v 1: make the most of; "He maximized his role" [syn: maximize] 2: make as big or large as possible; "Maximize your profits!" [syn: maximize] [ant: minimize]

I am not a "god of grammar and spelling", I just ask that you make more of an effort than spewing letters out per your stream of consciousness. You may not have meant to be rude, but you sure succeeded in it and even more so with your lippy response to me. My "12 line answer" was an attempt to teach you something that you obviously didn't know. Since you are interested solely in knowing the what and not the why I will keep that in mind and not waste my time in the future.
