Does the tire stager really matter?

I am looking at getting 15" bronze 5zigen FN01R-C rims for my 91 mr2.
+42mm offset.. I am wondering if the offset is about right and if the stager matters..

stock on my car was 195/60-14 front and 205/60-14 rear the ones im looking at would be
205/50-15 front and 225/50-15 rear.. does anyone know if the front to rear stager really matters and would it be better to go like 205/50-15 all the way around or even the 225/50-15 all the way around.. Or does having skinner tires up front help the steering/ cornering?

thx
Enrique

i personally dont agree that stagger matters all that much, i say if its more of a personal preference than anything else, i plan on going with 225's all the way around also so go for it

How much tire stagger matters will depend on what kind of driving you do. For normal street driving it makes minimal difference 99% of the time. If you drive on a track or if "spirited" is a good descriptor for how you drive normally then the stagger matters more.

If I'm not mistaken what it does is help keep the steering of the car neutral. You want the traction of all 4 tires to break at about the same g force load during cornering so you don't have unexpected oversteer. Can anyone back me up on this or explain if my understanding is incorrect?

BTW, I've got the same suspension you do 91RED3S. How do you like yours?

The MKII was designed for staggered tire widths.
Going with the same size all around is going to increase the tendency to oversteer in a car that already has the tendency to oversteer.

I have seen at least two MR2s that bought "rim and tire deals" that came with the same size tires all around that ended up wrecked.

It's your car, it's your choice. I would never run the same size tire on a MKII.
If anything, my preference is to go to a larger stagger.

So would it be ok to have 17x6's front and 17x7/17x7.5 rear? I would be accomodating tire size for speedometer correctness as well.

There are few "staggers" to consider: rim widths, rims diameters, and tire width.

The question in this thread is tire width which I feel is crucial to have staggered (even exagerated stagger).

Rim widths is not as crucial as long as you have tire widths staggered.

Rim diameter stagger makes little performance difference but a big visual difference.

My street set up on Jekyl (and what was on Hyde) was:
FRONT: 16X7 w/215
REAR: 17X7 X/235

MR2s do not look right to me with 17s all around.
The fronts end up looking to big IMO.

front will be fine ...I'm running 17 x7 205/40 with no probs. I don't remember the offset..somewhere between +38 & +42.....
as for the rear, hieght is OK, but thats a pretty wide tire. not sure....might be OK with that offset...

I was using a 235/40/17 rear, but right now I have a 235/45/17 which is a bit tall, but I got them very cheap.

The fronts are 215/40/16s

I agree with Hyde, a healthy stagger is good, more is better - at least 2 tires sizes between front and rear.

I've driven an MKII with 215/40-17s all around and it was a handful to drive, felt like a slippery bar of soap in the rear while the front was planted. I've staggered everything on my wheel setup: width, size & aspect ratio - and it's great.

I'm pretty sure this question has been answered, but I'll add my $0.02 I think stagger is crucial.

When I got my rims and tires, honestly I got the sizes mostly for the looks, but I soon started autocrossing afterward. I noticed a huge difference when I switched back and forth from my 17's (245 rears) to my stock 14's (205 rears). With the 245 rears, the rear end just feels a lot more planted to the ground. The point at which the rear tires reach their limit is higher than that of the fronts, which helps a car that wants to naturally oversteer.

4DMR2t, exactly ....

My hillclimb set up is 265 rear and 225 front (talk about stagger ).
The result of this is a very well planted rear end and I only get oversteer if I make it happen with the throttle. The car is incredible predicatable.

lol ... of course my drag set up is 275 rear and 165 front, but that has nothing to do with handling
