Shifting into 3rd problem

My 91 turbo just recently started making a strange noise when ever my rpm's are up and i try to shift into 3rd it almost sounds like the gears are grinding but i know thats not it because the clutch is in all the way and the clutch is only 2 months old. I am thinking possibly a syncro or a really bad shifter bushing but it dosn't happen in any other gear and only when im trying to stay in the turbo. 3-6 RPM. I already ordered a B&M short shifter and new bushings and linkages, i hope thats the problem. Any Advice or suggestions would be great. Thanks,

-Chris-

The syncho is DEAD. It will only get worse. Eventually, it will grind no matter what rpm its at. My Integras trans went from barely grinding at 5k rpm to what I described above, and it grinds shifting to any gear after 2nd (sometimes I try to shift from 2nd to 4th to avoid grinding 3rd, but it grinds 4th instead)

If you know how to double clutch properly you can get into gear without having to listen to the noise. Takes some practice to do it well though.

That's what happens when you shift normally. If you double clutch correctly the syncros aren't asked to do any work so they never complain.

That's what I thought at first with mine, but there's way too many out there with the syncro problem for that to be the case imo. Must be a design weakness.

Double clutching isn't a skill you really need until you drive a vehicle that either doesn't have syncros or the syncros are shot. There's nothing wrong with letting them do their job when they are working.

To double clutch:

1. Depress the clutch and move the shifter into a neutral position.
2. Still in neutral, release the clutch and rev the engine to approximately the right RPM for the gear you're moving into.
3. Before the revs drop shift into the gear you're moving to as you normally would.

When double clutching is done well passengers shouldn't be able to tell that your syncros aren't working.

Hope that helps. If you want more information on how your tranny works you can find it here: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/transmission.htm
