5sfe or 3sgte

i know this is asked alot but, in my case anyway, i dont think i want to get a 3sgte is it possible to get a turbo kit for a 5sfe without making massive mods, i have heard that people who do get massive problems but i would (if possible) like to boar out the cylinders and get it to a 2.4 or 2.5L see how that reacts to a turbo, has anyone heard of this being done? sure the 3sgte is nice but i would rather not swap engines if possible, if i have to get a 3sgte thats cool i am jsut wondering this because i wanted to know what will cost more

You might be in a little over your head. As far as I know there is only 1 2.4L MR2 around. Any 5SFE that is making any decent power is using a 3SGTE head anyways.... so either way you are looking at buying 1/2 of a 3sgte anyways. Plus... buy the time you get done building the motor and buying all of the parts... etc... you will be well over the $5k mark.... cheaper just to selll your car and buy a turbo. Or if that isn't an option... do the swap.

eh there is no way buying a turbo is cheaper i will probly just get a swap then if i where to buy a turbo for not a retarted amount like most turbo's go for here in IL geting a jdm one is better because almost all of them come with 30 to 50k miles on them(engine that is)

I have a feeling that people want to turbo the 5sfe just because its bigger. People are dumb.

Actually.... in most cases.... selling your NA and buying a turbo IS cheaper than doing a swap. My swap is a perfect example.

FYI: My car is an NA -> Turbo swap.

Actually.... in addition to my turbo.... yes I do have a dented to hell n/a with 12x,xxx miles on it. And my car had 150k when I swapped it. Mileage means nothing..... it is the price of the clip, mistakes, ut ohs, brining the motor that has been sitting for a while back to life... etc. Exhaust, intake, misc hoses, fuel pumps, breaks... etc. It all adds up. Sure you can do a half ass swap for a couple thousand dollars. But then you have a half ass car.... who wants a half ass car?

Never heard of them. But I know I got a clip for $2,100 that had the engine, tranny, intercooler, ecu... etc. That was all fine and dandy.... but I still needed.....

Exhaust
B-pipe
Downpipe
Intake
Air Flow meter
Axles
Coil and ignitor
New ignition components
Intercooler (was supposed to be there... was missing)
Wiring Harness

I'm probably forgetting other stuff... but the point is... I ended up spending another ~$1,500 in parts.... not to mention the labor to get it swapped in. I'm not saying you have to take my/our advise... but don't come crying when this happens to you (I didn't).

Considering how much more insurance would be if i bought the turbo version other than swapping($1000 more every 6 months) id prefer to just swap. Yeah itll cost a bit more, but then the parts i will replace will be new so i wont need to replace them again later.

Russell, I had the same question as above about the turbo swap on the n/a 5sfe motor. I talked to my stepmother today about selling her 93 MR2, 80k mile car for 5,000.00. The only catch is the car is non-turbo. I looked at the spec. on the 5sfe engine and its rated at a turbo friendly 9.5 compression ratio. Since the price is so good on the car I was thinking about buying it and doing the turbo upgrade. The question is how much power did the turbo add to your car, and about how much hp/tq does these 5sfe engine handle in stock form before grenading? Thanks, Mike

Russ, I think I misread your post. Did you swap the 5sfe motor for the turbo motor? If so disreguard all I just wrote above...........Mike.
