draining the coolant

do i have to drain the collant to replace my thermostat? its 86 mr2

you can, but you can just remove the thermostat and lose some of the coolant. then top it off again. if your coolont needs changing, then go ahead and drain it. make sure you evacuate all the air or you will have overheating probs.

You fill the coolant as much as you can fit in without running the car. Then turn the car on at idle leaving the radiator cap off. While the car runs, it will bubble out all of the air in the lines. Every so often you will have to add some more coolant every couple minutes while the car is running, until it stops bubbling. Coolant will bubble out, it's also pushing air out of the system as well. Usually it takes about 15 minutes to complete the process, you will know it is done when the bubbling stops. When done, just make sure its at a good level and put your cap back on.
