Primary catylitic converter question

yea over the weekend i had a chance to remove my turbo on my lift, i knew i was in for a a knuckle busting of a good time. we started out removing the exhaust and intake and intercooling pipes. then moved on to the primary converter. I removed that in about an hour and when i removed it there were no waffles in it. I'm assuming maybe this is just a collector pipe or rather the previous owner knocked them out. either way i was wondering if any other turbo owners know what im talking about.

It could just be that it was gutted. Meaning that someone removed the "waffles" to free up some HP. Do you have an aftermarket exhaust system? If not, when driving does it sound as if you did?

my exhaust is stock but it does have a nice tone to it, so i guess the previous owner did gut the cat, its not a loud tone its more of a soft throaty sound.
