2nd Generation my turbo mr2 with an 5sfe block?

can i put the short block of an 5sfe in change of my 3sgte block? just change the pistons? OR, put a head gasket that lowers the compresion? just make holes in the oil pan and thats it?

It's not quite that simple. I would suggest that you check out the hybrid forum at www.mr2oc.com

what's wrong with your 3SGTE? are you looking for more displacement?

Well, if you want to use the 5sfe to mate it with the 3sgte head, you will need lower compression pistons (cp pistons I recommend), 2.2 crank, and 2.2 rods. You will also have to drill to make the oil lines on the block. Last but not least, you will need a metal head gasket. Whether how much horsepower you are looking for, you will probably need to end up buying pauter rods. Thats pretty pricey costing over than seven hundred dollars. The stock rods should hang but I would get them shot pined and maybe heat treated to take the beatings. I probably should have done this instead of doing the stroker kit but I didn't have money to spend on the rods. More displacement means easier way of creating horsepower. IF your consider doing this, talk to chris from engine logics. That guy helped me out and answered all of my questions.

i wouldn't trust OEM 5SFE rods any farther than i could throw them. not for a boosted application. i'm running Eagle rods, which aren't as beefy as the pauter, but they're among the lightest rods you can get for an MR2. OEM 3SGTE rods are much stronger, and have in some cases, held 600whp+.

I see what you are saying. The 5sfe rods aren't really beefy but they don't look weak like honda rods either. Do you really think the oem 3sgte rods are really that strong to hold 600whp? I bought the eagle rods myself to have a strong built bottom end. Where did you read about the oem rods being able to handle all that horsepower?

2nd Generation change pistons?

do i really have to change the pistons? i have seen some metal head gasket's that say they lower the compresion. these head gasket it's specially made for the 5sfe, for the people that want to boost their 5sfe, so i woul only drop the compresion rigth? i know it's better to go with the cp pistons but the head gasket will work rigth? reliable? -thanks for your help-

the pistons are not terribly strong in the 5SFE. i would strongly recommend new rods and pistons if you're determined to boost the 5SFE. the best way to get boost in the MR2 is the way the factory did it, with the 3SGTE.

I agree, throw away the 5s rods and pistons. And yes the cheapest way to lots of power in an MR2 is the factory way plus a bunch of fuel and turbo mods.

As for the 3s-GTE rods. They have been proven to 600 whp. Horse Power is not what bends rods, its usually revs and in some cases massive amounts of low end torque (thats not the case with the 3s BTW).

I agree with quadcamsix. Consider buying the rods and the pistons. Sometimes going cheap is not the best way. Thats the reason I didn't do the 2.2 set up.
