Gas Fumes

I purchased a 1985 MR2 6 months ago in pristine shape. I live in Florida and have been noticing that when I want to ride with the windows down I get a lot of gas fumes and have to roll them back up and put the A/C on. Anybody know why this is or what I can do to prevent this?

Is it gas or exhaust?

If it's exhaust then you prolly just have an exhaust leak somewhere. If it is actually gas I would find the source before starting the car again.

USA Exhaust ?

It could very well be exhaust. I have thought lately that it is the catylitic convertor. I put a brand new muffler on it a month after I got it as it had a small hole in it. Is it possible the convertor is bad??

i smelll gas in my cabin also....could never trace the source..just lived with it.....could be your charcoal cannister..not sure if mk1s have them or not...i don't think its the exhaust..those fumes would travel out behind the car....

Make darn sure you don't have a fuel leak anywhere. Sure would suck if you pulled up beside someone who threw out his cigarette butt and ignited a leak. My pops just went through the same thing. He had a small leak in the fuel send line of his 1.8T Passat. It ended up being a 10 minute 15 dollar repair.
