Power Steering problem..

Hi guys!!
i've got a problem on my power steering. months ago(before my accident) the P/S warning light on the dash would sometimes light up and i would sundenly the steering becomes hard.. no more power steering! then il shut the engine off and then start it again, power stering is back to normal! so i didnt mind to much then.. but now its always on and the P/S is not functioning.. what could be the problem?? my mechanic checked it and think its the P/S computer box that is screwd up.. could this be? thanks in advance for your help guys..

sounds like your power steering computer. i had similar symptoms. all i did was unplug the power steering computer harness and wait a minute then replug it and it has werked ever since (8 months). if youve tried this i guess yer going to have to see what the other users might suggest.

Just so ya know; if you disable your power steering that causes your steering to get mushier not tighter. It's still a hydraulic system whether you're using the power assist or not.

yeah gairloch's right. You have to actually swap it all out to a non power steering unit if you want a true car w/o power steering.

It's actually harder to drive/turn a car with it just disabled than it is on a car w/o power steering.

there was actually a trick to get the power steering back... this is a common problem from what i hear... all you have to do is put the key in the ignition and turn it from the off to on position 14 times without starting the car or cranking it... just the on position... this method works for me just fine... my p/s usually goes out once a year and this quickly fixes it...

that's only a temporary fix though. It'll come back eventually.

dumb stupid mechanics! theyve been looking for the cause of the problem for a week! then i got tired and brought the car home to fix it myself.. it didnt take me 5 minutes to spot where the problem was.. it was just a faulty connector for the power steering pump!

what i don't understand is...why is it that turning the iginition off and on 14 solves the problem?...i'm assuming it resets some relay or computer or something...and why is it only temporary?...what causes the problem in the first place?

I, for one, am not paying for anything if this simple fix solves the problem...even if it is for just 8 months at a time...
