Ticking noise from behind!!!!oAH NO!!

Hey guys, I just got my clutch done and when I am above 30 mph I hear a ticking sound from behind when I decelerate. It could be the clutch but I dont think so. The ticking is in time with the engine because when I clutch and the RPM's drop the ticking slows down. Any Ideas? Im debating if it is engine or clutch because of the timing but it is very hard to tell.

^ my thoughts exactly. the MR2 exhaust manifold is notorious for warping. I had to replace mine. It made a ticking noise like you described. increasing with rpm's.new one was $300.00 from dealer...

Lol I wish I was boosting. I have a NA!! I know it sucks. Do your really think its the exhaust manifold? My mothers windstar had a cracked one and it ticked all the time. Mine just ticks while I am not accelorating. It could be doing it all the time but maybe its covered by the engine noise. Also wouldent I be able to hear the ticking while im in neutral and reving it? I only hear it above 30 mph. Keep those ideas commin. Thanks for the previous responses

I dont believe I said that the ticking noise would increase with rpm's I just said that it was in time with the engine becasue I dont hear it as im speeding up only when im slowing down. Its very strange

I guess i miss understood. I have read many of your posts in the past and i was thinking you had a turbo...a 1000 pardons. mine did it 100% of the time. even at idle...and I'm not aware of the N/A's sharing the same ex. manifold problem..

I seemed to have a similar problem when i had my clutch was changed.... It happened in the highway everytime i let go of the gas.... the problem was simple... well in my case at least.... When my mechanic changed the clutch he had to pull out the whole engine and in the process one of the engine mount bolts that hold the body with the transmission was too rusty to save so he had to cut it (bad idea) so what was rattling was actually the lose engine mount that wasnt connected to the transmission so it was hitting against it when i decelerate ... Hope that solves your problem

Given what you described this is unlikely, but have you checked your CV joints?

That sucks. Cutting it off wasn't the bad idea, not welding a stud back on in it's place was the bad idea.

Thanks a bunch guys! I will check the mounts as soon as I can get a jack to lift it. I will also check the cv joint also. The mounts sound like a good thing to check since they were so hard to reach, maybe one wasnt tight enough and rattled loose. Ill update when I solve the problem. If anyone has more ideas, please post

I was driving today around 65mph and I pushed the clutch and let my motor slow to idle speed. The ticking noise went away. So it cant be the CV joint becuase the axle would keep moving no matter the speed of the engine. Are there any ways of checking the exhaust manifold besides taking it off?

if you have an exhaust leak you'll see black soot around the area where it's leaking from.
