Question Engine question

Ok,the MR2 has the 5sfe engine, and also the 3sgte.I assume they are the base engines that are from the factory.I understand you cannot turbocharge the 5sfe without major modifications.I hear every one say the 3sgte swap is the easiest way to increase HP in the MR2.However,i was just browsing the parts section on E-Bay and in the engine section they sell a 3sfe for the MR2.Wassup with this engine??Whats the difference in HP between the 5sfe,3sgte and the 3sfe??The reason I'm asking is that these 3sfe engines are cheaper than the 3sgte.I'm gonna assume that the two engines(3sgte and 3sfe) probably are Toyota made and share the same major parts so my question is....can you put a turbo on a 3sfe thus getting a turbocharged engine for the MR2 at a lower price than going with the 3sgte swap?? If you buy a 3sfe what do you need to turbo that beyootch...?? Is it even feasible to put a turbo on a 3sfe? And most important, has anyone done such a thing to their 2?? What is the HP difference in the 5sfe and 3sfe and displacement..2.2liter or less...more..??

Wow, you've got a lot packed in there. Punctuation, spacing and paragraphs are your friends :p

I'll see if I can answer your questions.

1. "I hear every one say the 3sgte swap is the easiest way to increase HP in the MR2."

A turbo swap is one of the easist ways to get BIG horsepower. If that's the best choice for you will depend on your expectations and goals. Other alternatives would be to modify the 5sfe for modest gains or to consider a v6 swap.

2. "Whats the difference in HP between the 5sfe,3sgte and the 3sfe??"

The 3sgte is a turbo motor that has unique parts but can swap some components with the 5sfe and presumably the 3sfe also.

The 5sfe and the 3sfe are very similar NA engines that output essentially the same amount of power.

3. "I'm gonna assume that the two engines(3sgte and 3sfe) probably are Toyota made and share the same major parts so my question is....can you put a turbo on a 3sfe thus getting a turbocharged engine for the MR2 at a lower price than going with the 3sgte swap??"

The 3sfe, 5sfe and the 3sgte are all toyota engines. You can find a list of Toyota engines and their primary statistics here: http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/P...ct/Engine.html

The 3sfe and the 5sfe are very similar motors. You would be facing the same challenges trying to add forced induction to either.

3sgte: 3s block, turbocharged, GE head; 2.0L, low compression, performance head.

5sfe: 5s block, n/a, FE head; 2.2L, higher compression, economy head.

3sfe: 3s block, n/a, FE head; 2.0L, higher compression, economy head.

please never again think of putting a 3sfe into an MR2. it has less grunt than the 5sfe, and does not make up for it with power up high in the rev range. you'll still face many difficulties with turbocharging it, and the results will be worse than a 5sfe turbo.

the engine that you are thinking of that is similar to the 3sgte is the 3sge, not sold in the MR2 in the US. Europe, Japan, and Australia (maybe Canada, i'm not sure about them, crazy canucks) all got the 3sge as their n/a engine. a 3sge swap would be worthwhile, but they're not much less expensive than a 3sgte swap.

recap: 5sfe, okay for what it is. 3sfe, BAD BAD BAD. 3sgte, very nice. 3sge, good stuff.
