'91 MR2 turbo

Hey guys,
this is my first time on this forum so I guess intro is proper. I recently bought a '91 MR2 turbo with about 160k miles(ouch) but the guy I bought it from took real good care of it, no rust, minor chips/scratches but to be expected with original paint(aqua-marine), no mods or serious problems. I can hear the shaft play in the turbo when it spools; so I know that needs to be replaced(duh), also it recently developed a coolant leak near the turbo, but I plan on fixing that in the spring. I would like to do some bolt-on mods to it, before I eventually change the engine, I would like to do a small turbo upgrade but I still want to be able to drive it without putting too much stress on the engine, any suggestions? Plus I want intercooler, downpipe, BOV. Thanks.

Welcome to the MR2 world

First off, 160K miles is not bad. I bought "Hyde" at 180,000K and got 4 race seasons out of
him and he is also aquamarine!

Shaft play is not something you hear, it's something you feel. The only way you could hear it is if it was so bad that the compressor blades were rubbing on the actual housing and then you would be dealing with metal shavings going into your engine.

Your coolant leak may be the HFH (hose from hell). If that is leaking, I would be concerned that it will totally fail. That would cause you a major inconvenience depending on where you are.

Before modding, I would suggest doing some basic stuff:
new TOYOTA cap, rotor and wires. Get yourself some factory platinum plugs to start with.
A new air and fuel filter and, of course, an oil change.

Getting the car running good proper before you start modding.
From there, when you are ready to mod, read this link:

As for the things you listed that you wanted:
*A downpipe will come with a turbo kit
*An intercooler is a great idea, but intake and exhaust should be first
*A BOV is a terrible idea ... keep the factory valve as it offers the best performance.

If you haven't found it already, you might want to chec kout: www.mr2oc.com

Good luck and happy boosting!

I assume the 'hose from hell' is the one that connects under the turbo...that'll be fun. Also the only reason I think I can hear shaft play, is because I can hear a ticking noise and it sounds like it's coming from the exhaust side of the turbo, but it only does it after I first start it up and shortly there after(I let it warm up first). The reason I want to replace the blow off valve is because I think it has a small crack in it and it's leaking.
