Question Need help with speedo.

So i finaly started to work on my car. Its been sitting in my garage for winter and ive had a hard week with school and gf and tickets and the mr2 really helps me relax.

Im attempting to fix my speedometer and im trying to figure out whats the problem.

i took off the the speed sensor where the cable is and i rotated it by hand. the speedometer does twitch so i dont think any thing is wrong with the cable. then i put a flat head screw driver down the hole where the wire would go and tried turning it and it wouldnt. NAturaly i thought it shouldnt since the trans is in gear. I dont know.

So the question is, is how do i go about testing to see if the mechanical gear is dead?

Any help would be much apreciated.

I looked at stephenmason.com/cars/mr2speedo.html and i dont want to go threw all the trouble of the gear being ok and havig to take apart and re assemble the engine mounts.

Im in a confined space with my dad's roadking next to me that is chromed to shit and yea i dont want to fuck that up.

And for the record f^ck cops trying to make there quata by pulling over some one who is aboyying the law because they waited 3 seconds and not 5 at a stop sign with no traffic.

... it might be easier to answer the question if we had a clue as to what year and engine type MR2 you have?!

The 91s are fairly well known for breaking cables or breaking the gear in the tranny.
AFAIK, you do not need to open the tranny to replace that gear.
If you are certain the cable it working than I would guess it is the gear.

but

im pretty shure the cable twitched. im going to use a drill and spin it to see what happens.

but why would the gear not twitch if engaged. like i used a screwdriver to see if it would rotate while its in gear and it didnt so i figure the gear isnt dead.

trying to get easy way out and want to see if any one knows any thing.

thanks
