ok im 16 and some guy gave us a blue 91 n/a mr2. I have the motor out right now and was wondering what i should have done to it before i pt back in. I know i should just do the 3sgte swap but i dont have that kind of money right now and this is my first car so i figure i will stick with somethin im not going to kill myself in for now. but i definately will probably do the 3sgte swap or maby even a v6 sometime in the future.
well if you want to do that 3sgte swat, dont wast your money on the 5s. there are litlle if any mods you can do to that engine and the power you get will be very very low. so just put the 5s in stock then save your money and get the 3sgte.
well this is my first car and itl just be my daily driver
Then stay N/A.
A turbo car requires more attention, especially when the HFH breaks or your turbo dies or you have intermittent boost problems or even sketchy compression in one cylinder. Turbos aren't cheap, and if you're 16, a job at that age wouldn't cover half of the expenses. Yes, there are turbo MR2s that have never had a single problem and are turning over 180K miles, but remember, you're planning on doing a swap. That's different. Some people have popped in 3SGTEs without even touching them, and that's great. But, you don't want problems to creep up on you.
Like everyone says, "There's no cheap way to turbocharge a vehicle." If you do the swap, be prepared to spend $$$ on general maintenance items, and having everything on the engine as new as possible. The more you do (if you do the swap), the less there is (and less potential problems) down the road. Every seal on the engine must be replaced. Your cooling hoses and pipes are the wrong size, too. Research.
If you want to work on the 5S, that can be expensive too. So it's up to you. You can have your cams regrinded for $200 at TED Components. This will make the 5S more lively, but the throttle body is still smaller than the 1.6L 4AGE.
The 5S responds well to modification for an N/A engine, but the turbo sees leaps and bounds with mods.
motors out because the guy that had it before me blew it and tore it out so i got it with no motor and we had another motor out from a cellica that was being switched over to a camery motor with intake manifold and exhaust manifold. so my dad said i could tear that motor down and build it for the 2

yeah it will definately help though with my dad owning a toyota shop

Well that's cool, since it might save you on labor costs, but this is an MR2, so parts are a ridiculously high amount for OEM (even discounted ones).
My advice is to learn how to drive the MR2. I've spun many times (mid-corner lift) trying to think I can handle it. It's a car that requires finesse and smooth action. Get some really grippy tires too, and ALWAYS keep the tire size staggered. Be careful in the rain too.
ya the car came with 17" ADR'S with toyos i dont know wut kind though and i dont thing that there staggered. ya ill slap the 5sfe in and stick with that for a while and build a bad ass engine in the meantime to set it up with later down the road when i have more experience. Hopefully i will be puttin the 5 in this week. I cant wait to drive this thing i bet it handles like a dream. thanks for the info man.......
I am 17 and i swaped my motors, best advice sell NA Car, buy Turbo Car. Unless your NA MR2 is mint.
ya i wouldnt call my car mint its got some scratches and im doing some body work on the passenger fender right now but thanks for the tip i might just have to buy a turbo once i get my car fixed up
