Well, as some of you may know, I recently crashed my '91 turbo, putting it permanently out of commission. With what seemed like a hole in my life, and a garage full of parts, I knew I needed another MR2.
This time, I'm going about it a bit differently. After a bit of experience and some new knowledge of the car, (along with a lot of help from the MR2 community) I can build it in the best way to suit my goals.
What are my goals you say?
Well, first of all, I've realized I have a lot more to learn about the dynamics of this car. Its handling characteristics are like no other vehicle I've driven. That being said, my first, and most important goal is to make myself a better (and much more knowledgable) driver.
I plan to do this by attending as many autocross events in my area as I possibly can. Along with a few schools thrown in there. Those always seem to help.
My 2nd goal is to build a car that will evolve with me over time. Right now, I consider myself hardly anything more than a novice. Basically, I wanted something that would help improve my skills and not hide my mistakes with power. It also has to have the ability for some upgrades down the road. Way down the raod. I want to compete in stock class and really concentrate on becoming a better driver. I can't make the car faster until I know how to drive it fast.
3rd, and really just a thought in the back of my head right now, is to compete in a more broad variety of competition. I love autocross, and don't plan to give it up for a long time, but I'd really love to try hill climb and possibly some other types of road racing. All in due time, though.
Well, with all that being said. Here's what I picked up.
It's a '92 NA. It's in need of a little TLC, but nothing I can't handle. Alot of the things that need replacing are things I would have replaced for autocross anyways, so I'm not really upset there. The motor and tranny feel strong and the body is in fantastic shape.
Like I said before, I hope to use this car as a huge learning tool. Alot of experienced drivers have told me the best way to learn is on a less powerful car. I hope I can learn a lot with this car. I also can't get myself into trouble with the power of the turbo. So, I'll do the regular maintainance and minor upgrades (struts, front sway bar, tires, etc.), most of which I have left from my turbo. For the forseable future, it will stay non-turbo, but I'm not really sure how long that will last with a perfectly good 3sgte sitting in my garage.
God bless my girlfriend for putting up with me through all this.
