i took out the mr2 for the first time since the rebuild last night and the scariest thing happened after parked it. when i pulled in the garage and shut down the car, i heard the most aggresive boiling sound. nothing was leaking or spraying out of anywhere i can see but it sounded like the motor was getting ready to blow. i filled the coolant up just as the mannual describes. my temp gauge sits at right above the half way mark. is this normal?
Assuming you have the turbo model, it is 100% normal.
After the car shuts off, the coolant stops circulating (at least via the water pump), but the coolant in the turbo will still get extremely hot as it cools the turbo. Once it boils up, cooler coolant replaces it so that it continues to cool everything until everything gets back to normal ... it's all okay.
mine does that too. seems to be normal seeing how I'm not having any overheating problems.making sure all the air has been evacuated from the system may quiet it down alittle.
In my old Legend I had the same problem. Turns out it was fluid spraying into the overfill reservoir. Radiator was clogged so I had it replaced and it solved the problem.
also when the coolant gets hot it expands and more of it goes into the coolant bottle. When you shut it off, and it starts to cool, it automaticly sucks in the coolant from the bottle. If it didn't do that than you would always be low in the system when you opened the filler cap.
I strolled across this one. I might have something to add, not a mr2 but my camry v6 did that before and after new head gaskets, a new water pump, belts and a valve adjust. it just stopped recently when i refilled coolant but left the pressure cap loose until the thermostat opened and coolant came out the filler neck. it has not done it since, makes me think it was air in the system. never made sense though because it was air, then it was coming out in the resevoir from the radiator, so why didn't it stop after the air purged itself? try burping the cooling system and see if that helps. I would be curious to know if it stops.
