wow..... almost 7 years since this thread was original!

IMHO 3sgte probably ruins first gens in terms of handling..... the E series added weight in the s/c is enough to make them not nearly as fun to drive (had/sold/rebought/traded/have again now an 87 with an ae101 4agze and an E51 trans)..... the power was there, but the handling isn't anywhere near as great. (yes, relocated battery to the front).... comparing to the other n/a's I've had (including the wifes 86 we've had for almost 3 years)

if you want more power, that is the most reliable and easy way to get there. the 4a just can't push that much w/out wanting to grenade. 300 whp is possible w/ 4a, but 500+ whp is doable with the 3s with about the same build. depends on your goals. i agree, it will hurt handling. makes the car more rear bias and heavier. if you really wanted to go faster in a straight. that's the easiest way.

why even have an MR2 to be built only fast in the straights?

makes about as much sense as having a school bus for an auto-x vehicle....
