Shifting into 1st gives me 3rd gear ??

Last night I picked up a Black 91 MR2 turbo. 205k miles! Sweet deal.

1st gear is messed up. When you shift into first it is actually third. No way to get into 1st. Does not grind or anything, it goes right in as if you were in 1st but it is third. All other gears work fine. Any ideas?

Maybe this is just a linkage issue?

Also the key only works the ignition, not the doors trunk or T-tops. Can I get a door key from Toyota? Ingition must have been changed out.

Thanks ! Glad to join the Mr2 crew.

Dude when your ignition is different than your doors could it possibly be stolen??? Dude I would worry about that before anything else. I hope not. The gear issue sounds like inkage. That can be adjusted by a mechanic. Good luck! Tell me how it turns out

OK, figured out the key thing. My driver's side door lock is broken. The Pass. side and trunk work but it takes some wiggle. The key is pretty old and worn. Maybe if I get a fresh one cut it will be better.

As for the transmission. Hope it is just a linkage issue. Guess I will just have to have it checked out.

Thanks,

Bob

with time the switch and key-holes tend to wear out... the switch on mine was replace...so i have 2 keys .. you cant haven't dealer give you a new key hole to match your key...it only works the other way.. a local lockssmith could make a set for the door for about 35 in MIAMI but i just use the alarm to unlock...i think the problem is linkage see if the bushing are worn out including in the actual sticK...or maybe they replaced it with the wrong one n/a cable are a bit shorter and sit a lil different.

OK, got the key code from Toyota and cut a new key. Works great now!!

The transmission however...

I took apart the shift lever mech. It seems like the lever just won't go far enough to the left for first. So i Tried pushing the shift cable by hand and WOW got into first !!

Seems like it should just be an adjustment but there isn't a place to adjust it on lever side. Not sure about the transmission side but I just talked with a mechanic who claims that no 5 speed linkage can be adusted. Sounds wired to me. How could the cable not have an adjustment. I plan on jacking the car up to find out soon.
