Iv had a knocking noise coming from the back of my car now for quite sometime, and I cant find where its coming from, Iv checked through all the rear joints, including drop links and antiroll bar bushes, replaced top strut mounts, everything seems solid. I have tein coilovers on it, but the noise seems to harsh to be a damper seal knocking, and i realy dont want to have to replace them, because I love the way it drives at the moment!(the noise doesnt seem to afect handling)
Has anyone had a similar problem and maybe be able to throw some ideas as to what it could be??
Thanks
I had a knocking sound last week, I thought my rear axle was falling out. If I turned right shapr at any speed I'd get this pop sound, or if I straightened to quick from a left I'd get a light thump. Felt like it was coming through my seat. Can you imagine how relieved I was when I found out it was the new fuel filter I forgot to install last week rolling around under there?
Could you give a better description of when it knocks? When its moving.. When its standing still while running, accelerating, decelerating, going over bumps etc...

and this is helpful to him how?
have you checked to see if your bearings seem loose? if it IS your bearings, you want to change em before your hub goes to crap

I just changed my right rear bearing. it had a slight knocking sound like you described, plus a little bit of a metal to metal grind sound. it was the bearing. took it out and it still looked good, but dry. after replacement sound was gone. there was no play in the hub. I guess i caught it before it could do further damage to related surfaces.Toyotaspeed90 may be on to something..
Its on my 91 turbo. Its a strange noise, like a sharp rattle as if something is loose, it will be ok over a smooth surface, no mater how hard you throw it around, and if you hit a speed bump head on, it will be fine, but if you hit it slightly off center, no mater how slow you might be going, it will knock. It sounds very much like a antiroll bar link, but i've replaced both and its made no difference. I checked the bearings for play, they are fine, and there's no whirring/grinding bearing noises coming from them.
It getting worse, so im thinking that if I leave it long enough, the cause of the problem will become apparent!
Thanks for the advice tho.......(apart from the filter under the seat one!)
Have you checked the mounting bolts for your suspension? I had mine come a little loose and it started making a knock much like you're describing.
You might be able to narrow it down by putting the car up on stands then taking the wheels off and listening while a friend jerks up on the bottom of the strut.

I got noise coming from the front left side and front right side of my car. So i brought it to my buddy and he put it up on the hoist. And my sway bar brackets that are screwed on the bottom of the car were still screwed on but the metal it was screwed on to was rusted around. So i changed the bushings and welded the metal and its all good now
