Hyde's Winter Work for 2006

Before I go into everything that has changed with Hyde over the winter, I want to take a moment to thank Aaron Bunch & ATS Racing for all of the support they have given me over the past few years. They have truly allowed the miracle of Jekyl Hyde Racing to grow and prosper. They came on board as my first sponsor and truly got Hyde going in a direction that could have never happened if it was left up to my own resources.

Sometimes trying to match the limited racing budget and schedule of Jekyl Hyde Racing with that of such a specialized business as ATS Racing proves too much. ATS Racing has been wonderful to us, and although they continue to support Jekyl Hyde Racing, I completely understand and appreciate that they will not be able to with the same intensity that they have in the past.

Aaron Bunch is one of the greatest members of this community and I can not thank him enough for all he has done for me. I will continue to support and promote ATS Racing whenever and wherever I can.

Aaron, ATS ... thank you.

Hyde's 2006 Winter Work is complete:

All of what follows would not be possible
without the dedication and help of our sponsors.
Thank you 2006 Jekyl Hyde Racing Sponsors!

More than two dozen people from the MR2 community and beyond have come together to contribute, complete and/or produce products for Hyde's 2006 winter make over & build up. All of their efforts came to rest at the feet of Jeff Herstine, Hyde's mechanic. I can't thank him enough for having the skill, knowledge & ability to culminate all of this work into the new Hyde.

The goals for the winter were:
· improved safety
· improved aerodynamics
· improved suspension
· improved braking
· 500-1000 rpm faster spool
· 1000 rpms added up top (8500 redline)
· 525-50+ rwhp

... did we do it?

What's new for Hyde for 2006?

< click photos to see bigger >
T-Shirts:
· Jekyl Hyde Racing shirts were designed by zerogenius & produced from Spaz Chicken (Rickman) are available from TWOSRUS. In a few weeks Spaz Chicken will be opening a Jekyl Hyde Racing store - details to come.
Safety:
· Installed better Roll Bar padding from Safe Drives

· Installed a battery & alternator kill switch

· Installed a 2.3L Firecharger System. In the worst case scenario, from the driver's seat I can activate the system and it will spray down the interior and the engine bay to help suppress a fire so I can safely escape the vehicle.
Areodynamics/Bodywork:
We are proud to announce:
Hyde is the official test vehicle for the
GRT Aerodynamics package designed by Tom Granberg!
· GRT flat-bottom ~ thanks TomG!

· GRT rear Diffuser ~ thanks TomG!

· GRT front end ~ thanks Sandra & not12listen!

· Chaser side skirts ~ thanks TomG! (& chemvolt)

· Border rear skirts ~ thanks TomG!
These were mouled into the stock bumber and everything painted black.

Areodynamics/Bodywork Continued:

· Custom-made under-skirts - this is a new item I have been planning for a couple of months and it has finally come to fruition. Betters photos and more details on this piece later.

· Aeroware side vents

· Replaced passenger side fender. It had a dent on it since I bought it.
· Painted headlight covers (and all new body pieces) black. The only parts left aquamarine pearl are the fenders, quarters and doors. Hyde's slowly turning all black - maybe we will actually finish that next year.

· Lots of new vinyl - photos to coming!
Suspension:
· Full Race's Front End ProStreet Traction Bars

· eBay front strut tower bar to triangulate the TRD strut bar

· Alignment (finally, after 3 years!)
Brakes:
· Goodridge High Performance Steel-braided Brakelines from TWOSRUS

· Toyota caliper rebuild (all four corners)
· Re-located the Line Lock solenoid so it was lower than the brake reservoir
· Synthetic High Temp brake fluid
Filming:
· The roll-bar mounted Hi8 has been replaced with a Chase Cam set up. With the ability to mount the camera anywhere on the car, you can expect significantly more exciting footage this year! ... and Volumn 2 of the DVD "You can run, but you can't HYDE!
Miscellaneous:

· Installed a new set of LSD axles and ATS Racing chromoly CV joints
· Installed longer wheel studs (even longer than last year!)
Part# ARP-100-7702 - these are 3.2 inches long.
And new lugs for the drag & road race rims (GOR-90077 & SUM-7540102)

· Installed an eBay catch can

· Installed Speed-Sources teflon-stainless clutch line from TWOSRUS !

· VDO boost gauge that goes up to 30 psi (my old one stopped at 25)
· Auto Meter EGT gauge (NoShoes can finally get off my back for not having one!)
Engine:

· Wrapped the downpipe and exhaust pipes up to the muffler.
· Hooked up the electric to the second intercooler fan.
· Cleaned up a bunch of hoses & wiring.
· A monster custom-made 4" intake from TURBOHOSES' with a massive 6" X 12" K&N air filter

· A new fuel system capable of 600+ rwhp from Wolfkatz.
Quote:
The fuel system features:
*Wolfkatz Engineering top-feed fuel rail
*Delphi Racing 1000 cc/min Low Impedance Top Feed injectors
*WolfKatz Engineering Injector Clips
*WolfKatz Engineering Custom Dual Walbro Tank Pickup
*Dual Walbro HP Fuel Pumps with MR2 install kits
*Aeromotive 10 Micron Fuel Filter
*Aeromotive 13101 Regulator
*Pressure gauge
*WolfKatz Designed Stainless Braided Fuel Lines and Fittings, AN-10 Supply with AN-6 Return
· SPEC Stage 5 Clutch (from Chico Race Works) & lightweight Fidanza flywheel (from Twosrus)
The stock 3SGTE FW on Hyde weighed 16.11 lbs and the Fidanza weighs 9.45 lbs. The stage3/5 clutch I was using was 14.16 lbs and the complete stage 5 kit weighs 15.07 lbs.

And from Hyde's 2006 main sponsor:
· Chico Race Work's bored & stroked 3SGTE
Quote:
The engine features:
*3sgte block bored 86.5mm, CBN surfaced, torqueplate honed
*5sfe crank, lightened, 3 stage nitrided, journals ground for 3sgte rods (CRW stroker crankshaft)

*Ferrea 6000 series 1.0mm OS SS valves
*Head ported/polished, pressure tested, CBN surfaced
*ENGLE/ATS valve springs
*HKS 264 cams
*Fidanza cam gears
*CRW HV/HP oil pump
*engine internals precision balanced (crank, rods, pistons)
*2.139L displacement
Dyno figures and photographs of the completed car coming soon. NoShoes is here and we are starting to street tune on Sunday (19th) and we have a dyno reserved for first thing Tuesday (21st) morning. I am expecting to do a proper photo shoot of the car sometime in the next week ... if not, I will just take some 'snap shots' of the car.

I would really like to thank everyone that is supporting us.

Hyde is truly the MR2 community's car which has been made evident, once again, by the shear number of people that have been involved with this winter's project. I truly hope they all feel some sense of ownership in this new animal. Furthermore, I hope that my abilities as a driver and my persistance in pushing Hyde through as many events (and as many different events) as possible will make you all proud.

Thank you,

WOW HOLY DAMN WTF!!!!! MR.J&H you have a monster MR2 now, cant wait until you go to the strip with all that new stuff .and i love what they did to the engine I salute you!! I only have 2 questions:1-what are you expecting to do in the 1/4 mile this year??? 2-Will that longer air filter work better that the one you have or is it the same??

10s in the 1/4 mile should happen, but honestly we are going after a muhc, much more interesting goal

I use large, long filters so they can take on a lot more dirt before they affect performance.
It just gives the engine maximum breathing.

We increased the intake piping to 4" from 3" because we are going to be running crazy boost and if we are trying to pressurize 3" pipes worth of air, we wanted a larger volumn to be sucking from.

The front bumper was designed by TomG on mr2oc.com.

He originally had a body-kitcompany produce those and his side skirts that go with it (different than the ones on Hyde). The quality is extremely poor, so he pulled the contract. They only produced 15 units, one of which you see there.

Tom is currently talking with Chaser (the people that made Hyde's side skirtS) about producing his full body kit. If that goes through, then they will be available.

wow, your long block is VERY similar to mine.

i have a 3S block honed to 86.5mm, 5S crank from CRW, nitrided, eagle h-beams, CP forged 9:1 pistons, ARP head studs, TRD HG, Ferrea 1mm OS valves, Crower springs & retainers, King Race bearings, the HV/HP oil pump, and the balancing.

i am VERY interested to see what kind of numbers you put down and how you spool.

-Mike

well, i knew right away that my built block was going to have to deal with a stock turbo and stock fuel for a while, since funding isn't limitless, as i'm sure you know.

right now i'm on a ceramic ct26, running as little boost as possible. i knew from the get-go that a larger turbo would have to wait, and by larger, i'm considering a Greddy T67 (not sure what trim, a/r, but probably the 8cm) running around 18psi.

i'm not concerned a whole lot with drag racing, but the car will see some road courses. any thoughts? btw, my SN on mr2oc is "fawker".

oh, also...

i'll most likely be going with Wolfkatz for fuel, and ATS for tuning and misc items/installs.

If you prefer road racing over drag racing, you might want to reconsider turbos.
I'd look into the GT turbos over the GReddy units.

do the GT's spool more quickly with the same flow? i'm still sort of in the research phase as far as the turbo goes. i mostly want something that will flow a lot of air, and i don't really want to run much over 18psi. when all is said and done, i'd like to see over 350whp.

Wow, Jeff. You now have a car that most of us just dream about. Congratulations

Are you going to be posting a dyno sheet?

I honestly can't believe I own it.

I will be posting a dyno sheet up tomorrow.

Within and hour or so I should be posting up photos from the photo shoots I did today
