Question Subwoofer Blown?

Hey guys, I really hate to put this kinda thread in this section of the forum but I feel as if I know the people and trust their advice a little better than anywhere else. I have 2 infinity kappa perfect 12.1D subwoofers. They sound as if they are muffled when there is bass. They can play trebbel well. They are dual voice coil and I have only plugged on in so far to test them. I was wondering if that was why they dont have good sounding bass or if they were subjected to clipping(the cones look perfect, thy still have the rainbow oil look on them as if they were very new). When I press directly up and down on the sub, it stays vertical. There is no scratching when I press on them also. It sounds as if they were panting(like a dog very quiet though) Im assuming thats just air moving. Im at college and I have no means of testing these with the dual voice coil. Do you think they are blown? If you want to take a chance based on my ignorance... I will sell these two for $50+s&h or you can pick them up if you are in the Frederick Maryland area.

Mate by the sounds of it you have screwed them subs! In my opinion you want to get yourself down to an ICE delear and ask them to fit some for you as no offence but it doesnt sound like you have a clue. Using just one Voice coil in the DVC sub will brake it pretty quick, they shouldnt be playing any trebble what so ever, they are subs so should play 100hz and bellow (playing High HZ will brake them) if they are playing trebble you have your amp setup wrong. The panting noise to me suggests you have a leaky sub box was it home made? if so did you use any sealant around the edges? i really suggest you pay to have the kit setup correctly you will be amazed by the difference

I just bought them from a pawn shop. They were using a home sound system to use them. I was only hooked up to a normal speaker loop. Not a low pass one. There is sound but it is mostly trebble. They arent in a box. If the voice coil was broken would there be any sound?

is this a joke???? yes it would play music but you will be slowly killing the sub, there really is no reason no to use both VCs so i dont know why your not and your telling me the sub isnt even in a sub box lmao by normal speaker loop do you mean its hooked up to your headunit? if so wtf are you doing! mate take my advice and go down to an ice shop or get someone who knows what there doing to set it up for you

I found these subs at a pawn shop in their origional box (packaging not a sub box) they were 50 bucks for a pair. I figured that since the head unit (Aiwa) that he was using was for a home sterio system and couldent play low enough and thats why they sounded like crap. These subs look perfect. I dont have much experience with subwoofers I am more a mechanic. I hooked it up to my friends low pass loop which she uses for her setup. They sounded the same(they werent in a box) It seemed as if the speaker jumps which should make sound. Could my problem be that they arent in a box and the bass isnt resinating correctly? I seriously have no clue and I have no problem admiting it! By the way wtf is and ICE shop? I found another way to describe the sound of my subs when they have no power to them and I press vertically on them. It sounds like you are scratching your skin(almost same sound but not loud at all, almost more quiet than the scratching of your skin) Based on this do you think my subs are busted or that they need to be in a sub box?

you can test subs out of a box. just wont sound great and certainly wouldnt sound like they are blown. both voice coils should be connected and shld be ran in either parallel or series. you should check out mtx's website. iirc they have some good diagrams.

you should also make sure you amp has enough juice to run the subs. what are the rms ratings on everything? also make sure how ever they are wired has enough resistance for the subs. all lot of lower quality subs need 4 ohm or more resistance.

if i had to guess it sounds like the po had them wired wrong and fried them.

an ice shop is the type of place you see on pimp my ride. all show no go.

I live in lanham but im at school in Frederick now. I thought it was worth the risk in buying both for 50 bucks. Oah well. Is there anything you can do with the subs now besides ruin peoples tvs? What does a blown subwoofer sound like? Try and describe it

in my case the negatives/positives werent ran right. i got an insane deal on a set of audiobahns b/c they were discontinuing them. they were cheap b/c they had 4 sets of pos/neg so wiring was a pain. i tried wiring them by the directions but messed it up. after a month or so i heard a high pitch whine mixed with a crunching noise iirc. then the subs just stopped working. i then realized i had the wired wrong so i fixed it but it didnt work. barely made any sound. i had another good amp/sub laying around so i tested the other subs/amp but nothing worked.

also in my case the subs themselves looked allright. they would move up and down fine just little to no sound came from them.
