Free Boosting??

I think the problem with my car not reaching full boost until 5500 is because my wastegate is being stuck open all the time thats what im guessing because when i took my boost controller off it still reaches 15psi. But its almost like trying to fill a sink with the drain out... the more you turn the water on or in this case gas yea it will start to fill (boost) but not as quick.. so I talked to one of my friends with a mr2 turbo and he made the suggestion for me to close the wastegate totally and let the car "free boost". I didn't know you could do that. But if its not good for the car then i don't want to do it. Does anybody know if this would work or be a good idea?? Thanks!!

you DO NOT want to take your friend's advice. i'm sure it could hit over 20psi and very easily destroy internal (read: expensive) engine parts. namely your pistons, and if the detonation gets bad enough, maybe you could mess up a rod or two.

don't do it.

Mikes right-BAD idea! the stock CT26 can spike/boost 20psi of hot inefficient boost making for deadly detonation...the stock internal wastegate is nothing more than a metal flap on a hing. if it's not opening/closing correctly, then your accuator or one of it's hoses may be malfunctioning.

They are right.
New turbo + wastegate set up are cheaper than rebuilding the engine

If your wastegate was stuck open you would not be making boost at all ... or barely any.
Why not have someone qualified check out your turbo system?

I hear ya! I took mine to the dealer here in town just for an oil change and they opened the wrong end of the car. I understand alot of mechanics are not familiar with the MR2, but i DO EXPECT Toyota tech to know. So whenever I have work done I don't want to do (or can't) I have to drive 42 miles to Little Rock to some import specialists friends of mine.
