Engine Swap Questions HELP!!

HELP!! I am swapping out engines on a 1987 MR2 with a newer engine and I am finding differences on the two engines. The newer engine does not have an EGR valve, The newer engine does not have the housing for the oil cooler. I do not quite have the engine out to see if the oil cooler housing can just be installed on the newer engine. The intake manifold on the 1987 engine has a spacer with throttle looking plates in between the intake manifold and the head. The intake manifold looks a little different as well but have not set them side by side to compare. My question there is should I switch all the old parts off of my old engine and install on the newer engine or will the new engine work without throwing up all kind of codes and crap. The engine that I am installing is supposed to have a little more power than the 1987 engine because of the colors of letters on the valve cover. Will the newer engine work without a computer change with out changing everything over? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ron

The engine is another 4AGE. I do not have the codes handy as I am doing this at a buddies garage. The valve covers look pretty much the same on the newer engine the spark plug wires are not visable as they are under a cover where the engine I am removing they go down through the cover, but I would think that is just cosmetic. The valve cover is silver like the one I am removing but with black and red lettering, the one that I am removing has black and I believe blue lettering. Where would I find engine codes on these motors? Thanks Ron

sounds like you have a smallport from japan

to use the oil cooler you will need to swap the oil filter housings AND the oil pan

to have the engine run correctly you will need to use all of the stock mr2 electronics.. including the injectors (would be best if you can find some low ohm 250cc/min topfeed injectors)

the intake manifold will NOT fit from the old motor onto the new motor.

Gen1

Yea, I do believe that it is a small port engine as today I finished dropping the old engine out of the car and put them side by side to do some comparisons. The intake ports on the newer engine are definately smaller than the engine I removed from the car, so the old intake will definately not work. I also noticed that there is an extra coolant line that goes from the block up to the rear of the head. These are the differences that I am seeing right now. The engine is supposed to be a JDM with low mileage. Has anyone had any experience with a JDM and are they really low mileage engines? This was advertised as having 10 or 20 more horsepower than the American engines?????? True or not??????? I am finding it hard to believe as the intake ports are smaller than the original motor that came out of the MR2. I do believe that without the EGR the engine should run a little better but not 10 or 20 horsepower better. I am still concerned about some of the electronics that I will not be able to use from the original engine and just hope that it will run OK. If there is anyone out there that knows of any info that would be beneficial I would really appreciate it. Thanks to all that have been chiming in. Ron

I guess the bottom line is will this engine work in my 87 MR2 and run OK???????
Or would I be better off tearing the original engine all apart and doing a rebuild???????
