gauge install

I bought an oil press gauge and I would like to install it, but the shop that has my car right now is telling me they cant do it because my car has the low oil press light; and I cant have both...(I think theyre full of shit and lazy) So my question is what is the easiest way to hook the gauge up? I don't really want to drill into my oil pan(would this give an acurate reading?) So can I just remove the switch and put in the aftmkt sending unit or do I need that connected?
