Temp. gauge sender?

I had a problem with my temp gauge going all goofy on me and then it stopped working all together. I'm thinking maybe it's the sender. Where is this located. There's a little thing on the driver's side coming out of the front of the engine that has a wire that looks pretty shot. Could that be it?

The gauge would show normal temp. but dip to the bottom when I would shift, leading me to believe it was a loose wire that would lose it's connection when the force from acceleration would go away. Does it sound like I'm anywhere close to knowing what I'm talking about? Any help would be appreciated, as always. The summer of fixes continues!!
