well, heres the deal. i bought an 88 mr2 couple months ago, BUT, the engine is done, threw a rod. but i have a new exedy clutch for it so far. i was gonna get a jdm replacement, so far the only difference i can tell is the head has better flow, no egr, and maybe slightly different ecu? but thatll run me like 1500us and i have to get the tranny and everything with it
now i work at a shop, so as far as getting it running, i pay parts and supplies used, at cost. i was at the junkyard last week pulling parts off a 90-91 corolla. those have 4age's in them as far as i know. so its the same block. we get parts from them free, they take our take (more money there). so i was thinking, i can spare maybe 1500 to get it going. i want to get an oversized crank pulley, to get 14psi, so thats 300~ there. then i need rods, and maybe pistons depending what shape mine are in. then i can get a block put together.
basically i dont have much cash, i just wanna drive this thing, i do want a bit of kick, its kinda something for the summer to hold me off til my project is done. rebuilding it this way, id end up spending a bit at a time instead of one huge chunk (i cant manage my money), and right now im not sure, but i think it might come out a bit cheaper, i gotta call around for a to get the bottom end together if i bring the parts. my other concern is getting a new engine to put in and finding out theres something wrong with it
the other thing i was thing of, is the egr, how hard is that to bypass, i probly need it to pass emissions, so thats another reason to rebuild. then i can take it off, i just need to know what im looking at.
anyway, any input would be usefull here, thanks guys
well, i did talk to my boss about it, i dunno nothing about rebuilding engine. but he told me if i can get the parts, we'll get it done. so i need a used set of 4agze rods and pistons, cheap preferably. this way works a bit better for me. ill still have the EGR on it, so i'll get it to pass emissiosn test, and take off the EGR. depending on pricing for parts, itll actually be easier rebuilding it, i dont have to worry about getting a used engine that might have problems with it, leaving me in the same boat

you work in a shop and you're asking all these q's??? hmm...
WELL.... first off, if the motor threw a rod i'm going to take a guess and say that your bottom end is shot.... usually when a 4ag throws a rod, it throws a rod right through the block (even both sides of the block on mine) making it unrebuildable
secondly.... i would reccommend just finding another 4age regardless.... if you're asking these questions, then i would say you should go with a bigport (pre 90 car.... could be any corolla gts, corolla fx16, corolla fx16 gts, or mr2).
the 90-91 motors weren't the same.... they lost the TVIS, had higher CR, had higher flowing injectors, and a redesigned head (including an oil drainback on the back of the head by #4). The electronics of your car *will* run it, but by the sounds of your knowledge i wouldn't reccommend tackling that project alone.... nothing worse than having your car sitting in the driveway and it cranks, but won't start
if you want to go supercharged, then i would reccommend going with a full motor.... finding all the gze parts and electronics isn't going to be easy and/or cheap...
if you want to go turbo, again, i would reccommend going with a gze motor and strip it down to the block.... and start from there
if you just want the car running/driving then find a motor in a JY or parts car..... bigports can be obtained cheaply
