89 MR2 - Sloppy shifter??

Ok, my shifter in my MR2 is horrible. First off, to get into 2nd I have to go over to the left more and down. Second, once in any gear, I can move the shifter side to side at LEAST 2 inches.

What is wrong, and what can I do to fix this??

I would first check the basics and make sure that the shifter linkages and bushings are in good condition.

The shift in both of the stick-shift MR2s I've driven has been sloppy like this... the business about going left to get into 2nd I don't seem to recall, though... But once it's in gear it does wobble around a lot. There is a fitting right under the boot that you might want to check for it being loose because I seem to remember that this being loose can cause it to shift... oddly.

There are two bushings and a tiny metal block on MkII shifter arms that actually contribute to the majority of shifter slop. I don't know if they're on MkI's though.
