Would an 86 w/o air conditioning have originally come with two radiator fans?
A friend's mr2 apparently had been in an accident before he purchased it - the fan assembly is a salvage part from an 85 and contains two radiator fan motors instead of an a/c fan motor and a radiator fan motor. Neither were working so my friend bought two new motors, $$$$$$$$. As it turns out, one of the old motors is in fact dead while the other one works fine when connected to the dead motor's wiring harness. .
So.......was his car originally equiped with two radiator fans and now one of the wiring harnesses is not getting power, or is the "dead" harness for an a/c fan that the car never had and not intended to power a second radiator fan?
Thanks for any assistance!

On the MKII, and pretty safe to assume for the MKI, the non-A/C car has only 1 radiator fan. You'll know for sure by looking at the relay box. Fan No. 2/Fan No. 3 are reserved for the A/C fan and A/C usage on the MKII. Fan Main/Fan No. 1 control the main cooling fan with input from the water temperature sensor.
Hmm, I have no idea! I have 3 MK1's... but all have AC. In fact, I don't know if I've ever seen a non-AC one!
Neither had the parts guy at the dealer! I think it is pretty safe to say that whoever repaired the accident damage hadn't either. Thanks for your input. 91MR2quickNA, thanks for giving us a way to definatively answer the question!
What is starting to make sense is that the one motor burned up because the temp sensor is bad - when we swapped motors, the good one started immediately when the cold engine was started. At $200 a pop, I am glad the repair dude stored an extra motor in the fan assembly for future use!
I can't imagine there is much to replacing a sensor and that a sensor is cheaper than a motor! Either way, I imagine my friend would be better off ordering whatever he needs on-line rather than getting it from the dealer - best place to order a sensor?

The radiator fan is controlled by a temperature switch attached to the radiator. The a/c fan turns on whenever the a/c is turned on. The fan attached to the a/c wiring harness was still good because it never ran - no a/c. The radiator fan was dead because it was worked to death - the temperature sensor was bad and the default setting is "on". What I have determined, as others have said, an mk1 w/o air conditioning has only one fan. Thanks for all your input!
