2nd Generation 4th Gear

helloz

I recently put a new master cylinder, and slave cylinder on 91mr2. After a few days of adjustments, I finally got the clutch pedal set where I wanted. It was doing great.

Today when I went to shift from 4th to 5th, it would not engage into 5th gear. It is stuck in 4th gear. The clutch still works fine, but the car will not move out of 4th gear. The shifter also is like stuck in 3rd to 4th range only. It will not move sideways at all, without muscle, and I don't want to break the cable(s). It moves freely from 3rd to 4th gear positions, but it is not doing anything, the tranny is stuck in 4th.

I talked with someone at a local tranny shop. He told me he had worked on Mr2's in his "younger days".

I told him I had checked the cables. I pulled the clips off them (near tranny), and they moved around freely in all directions, and gear positions, which in turn moved the shifter around freely as well.

He said it sounded like the part that the cables hook to. There is some type of a pivot gear/drive (I dunno) inside the transaxle, easy to get to, under the starter, which can either get in a bind while releasing one gear, and engaging another, or it can just break. He said it was free to check out, and it was not a major expense to fix.

Does anyone have knowledge of how this works, or what it is called?

I am going to have them put a new clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing in as well.

Also I would like to replace the flywheel, any advice on one for 5sfe, with headers, and open cone filter?

Thanks

2nd Generation

This is not the clutch, I drove the car to the tranny shop wednesday, and back home today. About 20 miles each way, avoided stops.

The clutch is working ok.

The shop said the cables needed to be replaced. Then they also told me that they had put the car in neutral, without the cables, with muscle, so as to push it around the shop. I tripped out at first, asking if he could put it back in 4th? He said he did not know where 4th was, but I got in it, and it was still in 4th.

At this point I am not sure, but they did remove all the covers, etc, and putting new cables inside would not be too hard of a job.

At least they did not charge me anything for any of this, but they said it would be 750$ with labor to get a new set of cables put in. I said ok thanks, and the car is back at home. Still not sure what this is, other than it is NOT the clutch, but will keep at it.

2nd Generation

After looking at this some more I have the following conclusion.
(right or wrong? I dunno).

Ok... It makes no difference if the clutch is in or out...

Since the shifter with the cables on as they should be, will only move from 3rd, to 4th gear positions, including neutral, only one cable is bad?

What I mean is, the shifter moves freely from 3rd to neutral to 4th, all in one motion, there is nothing holding it, it is VERY VERY VERY easy to move, but does nothing in regards to moving the car out of 4th gear.

The shifter will not move from right to left, or left to right, when the shifter is in the neutral spot., on way down from 3rd, or way up from 4th. It should move over to either the 1st, 2nd positions, or other direction to 5th, neutral positions. It is being met with LOTS of resistance, and will not move left or right.

Seems to me like if this is a cabling problem, it is only one cable, but now the task is which cable? I will post a pic of what I am talking about, as that will help to understand.

If anyone can help as far as ok, the one on top moves the shifter up/down, the one on bottom moves it right/left?

Thanks

Question Question??

TOP LINKAGE -- Does this control movement UP/DOWN (3rd - Netural - 4th)??
BOTTOM LINKAGE -- Does this control movement LEFT/RIGHT (Neutral - over to 1st/2nd)??

Also: Toyota Price on each cable = 204$
Toyota Price on the Linkage Part going into transaxle (under starter) = 61$.

Anyone know where to get toyota oem parts a bit less?
(not that I think either of these prices are unreasonable)

Thanks.
