I have an '87 MKI NA that has a bad EGR valve. I have been told to just remove it. The car is all original except wheels and suspention. Does any one what the valve costs and how hard is it fo me to replace it?

The valve is very easy to remove. Dealer has part, or check aftermarket suppliers. A Haynes manual I beleive gives steps to check to see if it is defective. On high mileage MK1's it is not uncommon for the EGR pipe to be clogged(carbon deposites) at the point that it is bolted to the intake manifold. Simply remove said egr pipe and clean. EGR system recirculates exhaust gases back into the engine via the intake. Many emmision testing places require you EGR system. Clean it yourself and check working condition. Very easy DIY project.
