Try filter first. It can be done in theory from the top and in practice with the car backed onto ramps. Surprisingly MKIs will BACK onto ramps, which is convenient as that is where the motor is. You do not even need sportscar ramps to back it, regular ones will do. Give it a shot. I did one with a car jacked and lowered onto blocks (Solid blocks!). Here's a hint: Don't change the fuel pump after a marathon session of trying to get the bloody thing to turn over. Pull the Fuel pump fuse and crank the living shit out of it for a while to clear the lines, otherwise you'll end up covered in fuel (like I did) and all you need is one spark to end up like the cover of a certain Pink Floyd album (like I thankfully did not), and I DON'T mean covered in lightbulbs.
Oh, and an 87 is a MKI, not a MKII.
MKI-1983-1989, MKII 1991-1999. The 1990 MR2s are someplace running races against the 1983 Corvettes.*
*Actually there ARE some 50-odd 1983 Corvettes extant. They were made as test vehicles and released to GM engineers and execs for evaluation. It was determined to be a good car, but not good enough, so it was refined some more and released 6 months late as the legendary 1984 Corvette. I do not believe there are any cars that can rightly be considered 1990 MR2s.
