Speedometer Driven Gear

Can anyone out there tell me how the speedometer driven gear assembly comes out of the transaxle case?

I've removed the machine screw and the small, flat tab that sits in a groove in the side of the assembly. It isn't clear at all what happens next. I'm guessing that tab fits in a slot so that it keeps the asembly from moving up or down. That would mean the assembly should just slide out, but it doesn't appear to want to come. I've used a large screwdriver as a lever in that groove and lightly tapped to see it would lift the unit, but no.

Any guidance from someone who's seen this would be appreciated.

Are you talking about the actuall assembly with the teflon gear on it or just the speed pulse sender? If you are attempting to remove the driven gear its probably just a bunch of dirt or corrosion that is keeping the unit in place. Once the ten mm bolt is removed, grab the assembly and twist back and forth unitll it loosens up, then the unit will slide out. If the gear is damaged check other parts of the transmission aswell unless the damage was caused by a bad speedo cable.

Should have said in the post - '85 AW11, 4AGE, C52 Transaxle.

Everything should be operational, that is no damage except I broke the upper, threaded part where the speedo cable screws on when I was trying to separate the bell housing from the engine!

There isn't alot to get hold of to pull out, but that's sort of what I expected I have to do. There is some dirt and grime around the top end of the unit.

If the trans has 100's of K on it the assembly can be a bitch to get out. Try tapping it around the edge closest to the trans caseing with a flat head screwdriver and a small hammer(all around the base). Im assuming you have it out of the car of course

Yes, it's out of the car, and has 120k miles.

So I'm tapping the outside edge of the sleeve, to get it loose moving in, then maybe prying outward in the groove where the tab holds it in place?

Thanks very much for your wisdom on this. Very reassuring to know someone's been here before.

QuadCamSix you're my new hero!

Tapping (fairly heavily) a screwdriver blade into the groove around the edge of the sleeve freed it up eventually, and prying up in the slot for the tab finally started the whole assembly out.

It was indeed *very* tightly in there.

Congrats, you must live near the ocean. That salt water vapor in the air always makes those things hard to remove.
