Gen1 New to the Racing scene

Hi all,
Ive been reading some of the old posts and they seem pretty informative. I have owned my 86 MR2 for over a year and now im interested in getting it modded. But, like all newbies, i have a few questions:

1) where can i possibly find the supercharger kit? would i need to swap to an '88 engine? did they even make an '86 s/c'd? how can i tell if i have one on already? would it be better to go aftermarket turbo?

2) would i have to get an intercooler for a stage 1 turbo or just upgrade the radiator? ive also heard something about an i/c unit might take the place of a radiator. How would that work?

3) Cold air intake: is it even possible on this little thing? ive seen fiberglass custom air scoops mounted behind the drivers-side glass. any idea who has them? what would the air filter be on something like that?

4) another thing id like to upgrade is the ECU. anyone have suggestions? mega squirt has DIY kit but i havent looked into it yet.

5) or should i just ditch my faithful MKI and go get an MKII?

1) If you want to swap motors check e-bay and JDM importer sites this is one i have used in the past http://www.gspeedcorp.com/engines/index.htm.

2) with the 4agze motor the intercooler is a top mount.

3) there a few different cold air intakes for these cars the side scoop ones work really well but are getting hard to find for a resonable price.

4) You'll have to use the ECU from a supercharged motor if you upgrade to that. Mega squirt makes good stuff and that might not be a bad way to go either.

5) NO, Stick with the MKI

ok so that was some insight

ok so it seems that an engine swap is not feasible, so that leaves either the turbo or the supercharger, and depending on the difficulty, it might be a DIY project.

but still, would i have to get an i/c for a stage 1 turbo and mount it in front of my radiator?
does anyone know of how they filter air with that side air scoop?

First off.... don't ever use the word "stage" again. I think you are in a little over your head for a DIY turbo or S/C project. A 4azge (supercharged motor) swap would be cheaper than either of the alternatives that you are considering.

An intercooler would NEVER replace a radiatior. They cool two completely different things. Radiators cool the coolant, and keep your engine cool. Intercoolers cool the hot air between your turbocharger or supercharger, and your intake manifold.

You have an MR2. A mid-engine car. Your intercooler would NOT be in the front of your car. Unless you plan on running 2.5 inch intake piping through the cab of your car.... which would be rediculous for about 3,000 reasons. Your options for intercooler would be an air to air intercooler, with some sort of air from outside of the engine compartment cooling it. Or an air to water intercooler... in which case you would have a heat exchanger (basically a second radiator) with water lines running to the intercooler in the engine bay.

please forgive the reference to a "stage". as i have said. i am a beginner and this is my first car, so im still learning. so much to learn.
any idea how much 4azge's are running stateside or will i have to have one imported from JDM?
does it require special motor mounts for the conversion? any other special hardware i should be made aware of?
doesnt the 4azge engine come with the intercooler mounted directly to the top of the engine itself? i thought i saw a pic of that engine earlier today and it had the i/c on top.

p.s. anyone yet know about the air filter on a side air scoop?

ok so i goofed, the i/c is not top mount on an 4agze. and i did check out speed corp and they were all sold out!! so i guess ill keep looking.

if your looking for the 4agze. there is one on ebay. i deal with the guy alot and he is trust worthy. he is out of osak, japan. he has a 4agze with 24k on it. price i think is $2.5k, full clip. his shop name is "RPM Garage". the cleanest engine i have ever seen. check it out.

There are legal car race events that you can do without moding your car.

Solo 2
Autocross
Rallycross
Drag Race

All are perfectly suitable for racing a MK1 MR2.

the occasional drag race or quick out run is perfectly fine, but going offroad with this car is not an option. i cant see this lil thing jumping hills and speeding over dirt roads no matter the mods. just my opinion.

looks like you have a good platform to start with AW11 is a good time attack car with a good suspention setup it will be good.ok lets say you dont have a 4AGZE in your aw11 you can always go all motor. 4age small port is good with a little bolt on stuff like, longer duration & higher lift cams, better valve springs and a better ecu.

I don't think cams, valve springs or an ecu are exactly bolt on mods. Nor a very wise selection of upgrades.

Rallycross has nothing to do with jumping hills or speeding over dirt roads.

Yes that's Teresa (my wife) co-driveing with me sawing at the wheel during the 2002 Kananaskis Rally in Canada. Man was that fun! But waaaay beyond what I was sugesting for the thread starter.
