i noticed the mr2 is classified as Mid-Engine RWD, does that mean part of the engine is in the middle? if the whole engine is in the rear then should it be called Rear Engine RWD???

NOPE. MR2 are classified as MRWD. So are Lambos, Ferrari's, lotus....Because the engine is place before the rear wheel, it's mid engine. Well MR2 engine is right at the wheels. Have you seen the old style VW beetles? Those are RRWD, so are city buses.

looking at the position of our engines with respect to the axles, it looks like we are only a few inches off from being considered RR. But, that couple inches is what makes us MR.

if an engine is on top of or in front of the rear or (the wheels as you say) then it is classified as a mid engine. it is on the ase test.
