Question getting a 86 mr2 opinion plz

Hey Everyone my dads' neighboris giving me an 86 MR-2. The problem is he hasn't started it in about a year. the rear fenders are kinda rusted, the drivers side window is shattered, the tranny slips outta 3rd, and the alternator has to be replaced.

We boosted it and....IT STARTED!!!!!! on the second try, but a few seconds after we took off the jumper cables, it died . i know i have quite a project on my hands and i have a avg knowledge on cars but i know someone who wants to help me out and i really really luv this car.

i was just wondering whats everyones opinion on this should i go for it???

He gave you an MR2? As in, free of charge? Sure, I'd say go for it if that is the case. Of course, I'm not sure exactly how much work you'll have to put into it and how much it will cost you, but at least you have one thing going for you - no one will try to steal it.

Alternator when I bought one for my 87 was I think 76$ from Autozone or one of those places about 3 years ago, not a fun thing to replace because the bolt is like a mile long but it isn't too bad. Transmissions I think you can pick up from forums and other things, price when I last looked was 200-300$ depending on miles and stuff like that. Or you could rebuild it, but if you only have basic knowledge than I wouldn't bother with that project quite yet.

Quater panels are rusted on the majority of that generation MR2. you have a few options.

1. If you can weld, cut out the rusted part, cut some nice ones off of a wrecked one ina junk yard and weld them onto yours, smooth it out and make it look nice.

2. They sell replacement panels for 300$ a peice online, they aren't painted or anything and you need to cut the old ones out and weld these on.

3. Learn some cheap body work. Thats what I did on my 87 when I bought it and the quaters were junk. I paid just over 300$ for the car, it wasn't too bad. I sanded off all the rust, then I used screen (metal screen) to build up areas that were really eaten away, or as a skeleton for the bondo to hold to while I built it up. The most time consuming part is finding the right amount to use, or you spend forever sanding it off. I'd recommend doing this, it's the cheapest and you'll learn a little about cheap ways to fix it. It won't stop the rust, but it'll make it hold out until you can afford to do one of the other methods.

As for window. They aren't too hard to change out, you should check out some local junk yards or ebay for a window. They aren't hard to find. I have a few parts cars and a few sets of trashed doors with windows in them, so if you can't find one send me a PM and we'll work something out. I just don't generally like shipping glass.

If you can boost the car and it starts then dies when you take it off it probably is just the alternator like you said, but you might need to buy a new battery too, but they're not too badly priced. You can get a decent one for round $40 from autozone or advanced auto or pep boys.

I'd say go for it. You can't beat free.

yea i'm gonna keep it and my buddy's gonna help me fix it up for now were just doing engine maintenance like changinng spark plugs and wires etc.
Can't wait to get her on the road still can't find ne fenders i found front ones but noooo rear i'd kinda rather go for the more evpensive long term fix then cheaper short term fixes.

i already bought the window for it but them half way through the installation i discovered that i don't have the right tools to continue.... yea not fun. does ne one know where i can get rear fenders.

I hate to brag, but i live out west where cars rarely rust. Mike is an 86 as well with no rust anywhere. I did have to scrounge a few body parts from the salvage yards here because of damage, etc. I added a spoiler deck lid and the biggest mod was converting the headlights to HID. Boy are bright, hehehe. Mike

PS , maybe ur better off finding parts from the west here and ordering them. I did see a few others in the yard with no rust either, but pretty much gutted, lol.

Thats a good idea but the problem with it is you know the parts are used, you can't touch them to see if they were in an accident, feel if it's all metal. Know what I'm saying? I've sold good quater panels from cars that didn't rust from here, but they sell high too. Last one I sold was like, almost 150$. Personally if I'm going to spend the money I'd rather get brand new, seeing as you're going to be cutting and welding anyway. It would really suck to spend all that money and realize half of the panel is bondo because it got smashed up.

For other parts I'd say get them online, used, if your junk yard doesn't have them, but quater panels are different, unless you're lucky enough to find a rust free one in a junk yard.
