speedometer stopped working

well my speedometer stoped working all of a sudden and the my miles stoped spinning . and yesterday its started working again and suddenly stopped. my friend told me it was probably the cable that links to the transmission or the one that goes in the back of the dashboard. i checked the tranny that wasnt it but i cant figure out how to remove the dash to check if it loose back there.

thankyou

What generation of MR2 is this?

If its a first gen, changing that cable is a pain in the butt. But getting to it from the dash isn't too hard.

Remove the cover that goes over the gauges first (2-4 screws above the gauges going skyward)

Unscrew the gauge bezel (2 screws on either side of the steering wheel under wiper and headlight switches) pull it out. twords the steering wheel and maneuver it around and out.

Gauges are screwed down only on the left and right side, undo them (you can tell which ones hold it in) , pull it twords you a little, this should give you enough room to put your hand behind it and pop it out. I had a hard time the first time I took gauges out because I didn't know how the plug came undone, but you just squeeze the two tabs and twist and pull and it should come right out.

You might need to undo some plugs located at the top back of the gauges to get to the speedo but they're easy to unplug.

For the MK2 I think it's the same idea, cept bezel first, because there is no top trim. I'm not sure though because I never had to take one apart.

Hope I helped.

check the cable at the trans end first! it's a lot easier! all you have to do is open the engine lid and look down at the trans towards the back!

yea check the one the trans. if its not loose... unscrew it. check the tip on the cable to see if its broken. then under the driver side in front of the rear tire... under the splash guard is where the two piece cable connects. check to see if they are loose or if the tip broke there. lastly check the input to the instrument cluster. cause its hard to get out cause the speedo cable keeps it from coming out far enough to disconnect everything behind it. gotta have small hands or the right angle. its a pain thats why i suggest working from the transaxle on forward.

Hmm

I think there are like 2 or 3 posts of this on the same forum page..... people should look at a couple of pages B4 posting a new topic... No I am not an admin.... I just thought I would give an idea so people aren't waitinf for their post to be answered... people don't usually wanna answer the same question twice
