first check you intake piping the engine rpm change could be caused by excess air getting into the engine. This could also cause the engine to run rich under boost pressures because air is being forced out of the hole. As for the speedo, check the cable leading from the trans to the back of the gauge cluster to make sure that who ever had been working on it had plugged everything back in.

i would definatly pull out the spedometer and such. how many miles are on the car? sad to say but you can turn the miles back on these, maybe broke it trying. as for the gas smell, check fuel lines and the big one that i have experienced is the fuel injectors will leak. also pulling air in wich can also make your engine have this rough idle. run your engine. get out and go to the injectors and you may hear a strange noise comming from them. your not supposed to hear anything from them. also you can try to spray them with a liquid, not water carb cleaner works. spray gently at the base of the injector with the engine running. as you spray each one if there is any immediate difference in performace then congatulations you found the problem
