Revs low when cold and high when warm MKII

Hi,

Recently got radiator re-cored, alternator refurbished, flushed and renewed coolant, renewed oil, renewed spark plugs, renewed air filter, renewed dizzy cap, renewed ignition leads.

When starting the car from cold it sits bang on 1000rpm, but before it used to sit higher maybe 1500rpm. As the car starts to heat up the revs go up gradually and sit at about 1600/1700rpm when fully warmed up. Its as if the automatic choke is working in reverse and increasing the revs when the car is warm. The cars revs fluctuate also when warm and when u put the clutch in when driving.

I have checked all the air hoses etc and plugs and everything seems ok.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

cheerz for the reply. Does this mean draining the coolant and removing the throttle body to get at the ISC valve or IACV?

try also testing you tps (throttle position sensor) test it for electrical problems and any cracks or physical damage including wire connections. worst case get a new one its fairly cheap and then plus you know you got a new one

sweet thanks for the reply. Took the throttle sensor off today looked ok but didnt really open it up. Will check it again tomorrow in more detail.

Anyone know if I have to drain the coolant to take the IACV off?

Cheerz

no... IAC is a electric solenoid... no coolant.

but it seems something is telling you IAC you operate that way. I'd go w/ cleaning the MAF. if you changed your filter but MAF.... especially if its a vane type sensor senses air restriction is still gonna show up and make the computer idle up the IAC

drained a small bit of coolant before I took the throttle body off. Got the IACV off and noticed it was dirty so I tried cleaning it. The valve doesnt close fully even when I have the electrical block off and twist it with my hand. I assume that is why it is not idling properly??

Any comments appreciated.

Soak it in something alchohol based (carb cleaner, brake cleaner etc) and then let it drain out. If it still doesnt close then its time to get a new one.

Wink

yeah, I used paraffin as someone told me its quite good and doesnt affect rubber seals if there was any. I loosened the two screws at the other side also and adjusted it so that the valve closes fully now.

Phoned toyota for a quote on the part and it was £200

Hopefully by cleaning it and adjusting it will have solved my problem.

Thanks Guys.

Glad you got it fixed I'm having issues taking off the ISC screws. Mine are nearly stripped and I can't get the damn thing off. Any pointers on getting it off?

oh yeah they are very difficult to get off becoz they use soft metal on the screws and they round easily. I rounded 2. Soke them in WD40 for a while or use heat.

Failing that cut the screw head right down the middle with a dremel or junior hack saw. And use a pair of mole grips to remove the remaining screw.

Hope this helps and hope you get it off.
