You don't need a scanner or any special tool if you're just trying to retrieve trouble codes. All you need is a jumper wire or a what most people use; a paperclip.

yeah, that;s true. you don't need to buy one, you just use the paperclip and start counting, and then the repair manual should tell you what number means what

your looking for a generic.... soltice / snap on scan tool. you could by one for about 500.00 but you have to by all the individual software for the cars you want to test. these tools are good for OBI and OBII.

now the 91 is a OBI generation car
its called On Board Diagnostic I.

OBI you can hook up a scan tool to pull codes... but you don't have to. you can go to the small diagnostic link in the p/s rear engine bay and jump two pins... not sure which ones. and your check engine light will start to flash. you have to count the flashes and look up the code meaning.

so i suggest if its just for your car... leave it alone. but if you plan on using it for a proffesional use. its not a bad investment
