Cool Hyde finally went drag racing ...

(Chase Cam video below)

When things are put into perspective, it was actually a fairly decent day.
However, in reality, 10s did not happen ... but it is painfully obvious that 10s will come easy in the future.

Island had an event going on today, which is not listed anywhere on their site that I can see. If I would have known that, there is no way in hell I owuld have went. They had a "nostaligia" race going which people brought out their incredibly old heaps that oiled down the track, crashed into walls and exploded rear diffs making for a long day.

They told us at the gate that "test and tune" people were only getting 3 runs in. Most people I do not even think got that many, but I was assertive (and a bit sneaky) and I got my runs in.

The had this stupid "rule" in place that street-tired cars could not run in the groove. Why? Because street tires tear up the track too much .... ?!?!?! are you friggin kidding me??

So whenever I pulled up to the line, they put a cone in the way of the righthand groove. I am soooo pissed about that. Then add in that the track was not prepped well at all and it was cold.

Hyde was one of hte first 6 or 7 cars off the line so the track really had no temp or rubber on it yet. I did a burnout and ran the car with the wastegate opening around 15 psi (still creeps to 27 pis by redline). I was 2-stepping on the launches and making over 30 psi before letting the clutch out. I had 22 psi of rear tire pressure.

The first run I spun the tires (too much clutch dump) and got out of it just a bit resulting in loss of boost running a 2.131 in the 60' ... blech. We managed an awesome 100.31 mph in the 1/8 @ 7.8 seconds and went onto to a 11.638 @ 127.96 mph.

I jumped back in line, lowered the tires to 20 psi, upped boost to open the wastegate at 17 psi and ran in the other lane. This is when they put me a bit oout of hte groove. I hit a 1.758 in the 60' which is decent, but not great for a 2-stepping car.

As I road out first gear with a healthy clutch slip, the cluthc pedal fell away from my foot ... the car was still accelerate so I nailed 2nd gear with no clutch pedal and the tranny actually grabbed the gear but acceleration suffered.

Even with being .35 faster in the 60', the clutch slip caused me to run a slower 7.8 in the 1/8 @ 98.98 mph. I can't stand how much I gave back by 1/2-track ... ended the run with a 11.674 @ 128.76 mph.

I kept in the beginning of the video the "cone" that I had to drive around.
You may think that after I get by the cone that I am centered on the track,
but keep in mind that the camera is mounted where the p-side fog light would be. It is not in the center of the car. You will also hear the clutch fall away at the top of first and then it just comes back in 2nd (one strangest thing I've ever felt)

Before the last run I realized that my drag radials were actually rubbing on the inner-part of the car. I can't even begin to guess how much that resistance was costing me, but I lost a lot of tire. I was using a bigger spacer than I was last year, but there is still so much negative camber in coilovers that I was hitting. On the way home I ended up putting a 2nd spacer in there and it seemed to be fine.

I also turned boost down on the last run so the clutch would have a better chance of holding the torque ramp. I had the wastegate opening around 13-14 psi.

On this last run they REALLY had me out of the groove. So much so that my p-side tire was on the "hump" between the grooves. I am soo friggin annoyed about not being able to set up in the groove.

Anyway, I left the line with a .08 reaction time and only hit a 2.019 (did I mention I was annoyed at not being in the groove?). Regardless of the poor launch, we hit a 7.61 @ 100.7 mpg in the 1/8 ... this was going really well, I nailed 3rd gear and was really focused on riding 3rd out to 8500 rpms. I'm not sure if it's just me, but above 8K I have serious problems grabbing the next gear. As I approached 8500, I went for 4th and there was nothing there ... no griding, no getting locked out ... it just went no where, I frantically hunted around to find the gear just so I could keep going and it finally got in at the finish line while coasting down.

Even with that, we went 11.56 @ 112.69. When I was at 8500 rpms in 3rd gear I was well over 120 mph ... so that was quite a coast down.

?!?!?!

The really good news is that I was hitting 125-126 mph last year with the wastegate opening at 24-26 psi. Now I am hitting 127-128 with the gate opening at 15 p-17 psi!!

I can't imagine what it will do when we run 28-29 psi

Going down the track has never felt smoother to me. This Chico Racework engine really hums and the NoShoes' tuning is very smooth.

I suspect once we get the Tilton in there and finish the tune, we will be running 10s much easier. The power is obviously there. I just need to get some seat time back and get a clutch/flywheel combo that can get the power to the ground.

That's cool, are you going to run more this and try to hit 10s or next year?

There is a chance we will go out again this year, but I am doubtful.

From the numbers we ran yesterday, it seems like with the Tilton twin-disc clutch and a completed tune for high boost we will run 10s consistantly. I suspect the ultimate potential for the car will be 10.2/10.3 around 133 mph.
