91 MR2 Needs "EGR" valve

Was told by the mechanic that my car needs a "EGR" valve. The valve is clogged and that's causing the car to cut off occasionally when the brake is applied. He didn't have the part, nor could he provide an estimate. Has anyone had this problem?

I haven't had this problem with my MR2 but it did happen with my truck. More times than not if the problem is simply that the EGR is clogged, and not the pressure sensor then you can just take out the EGR and clean it with carbon cleaner, or with a little rubbing alcohol. I clean them with q-tips. When you use them they will come out black for awhile. Keep cleaning until its grey. This works most of the time, like 9-10, and is free!
Hope this works for you!

you sure he tested it right...?

its a negative transducer type EGR... so that means it opens w/ the absence of back pressure in your exhaust.

most mechanics just apply 10 hg of vacuum to see if the engine stumbles or not.
if it doesn't they condem it w/o understanding there is 7 different types of EGRs all test differently. its has a load sensing solenoid that prevents it from even opening by playing w/ the throttle... the vehicle has to be moving.

and EGR is a emission control device. all it does it recycle exhaust air to lower combustion temperatures to prevent the formation of NOx.... NOx is the 5 gases which i thought was only tested for in California... every other state uses 4 gas.

so smart things to do... is buy a vacuum pump for 30.00 and a factory manual you can get on ebay for 15.00... now factory manual.... not chiltons...

and read and test it yourself.
