Question Is JDM 5-speed 4A-GZE transmission identical to US version?

I just purchased a JDM transmission described as an 88-90 MR2 4A-GZE 5-Speed Transmission but my mechanic says the shifter linkage is on the opposite side compared to the original part. Has anyone successfully installed a JDM transmission into a 1989 MR2 Supercharged (or similar)? Is there anything my mechanic needs to know to make the part compatible with the U.S. version or should it be 100% identical?

if the linkage is on the opposite side, it's from a FWD car.... the selector shaft on the top of the trans is the same..... do some searches and you'll find how to use the stock linkages by modifying the FWD box....

Is this tranny from a Corolla?

Thanks for the answer. Does this mean that Sunrise Auto Parts who sold me the transmission as being from an 88-90 MR2 actually took the transmission out of a FWD Corolla?

I found one article on converting a FWD transmission to RWD (<http://www.padandwheels.com/mr2/blacktopproject/day13/c56.html>) but it requires machining a hole into the side with a drill press. Since my mechanic will be charging me labour for the modifications, it's better for me to return this tranny while I can still get a refund and wait for a RWD part.

well, finding an MR2 E series transmission isn't exactly easy...... yes, drilling a hole in the selector shaft is required....

also, you NEED to make sure it's an E51 for sure.... the e58's i've seen use different axles (both lsd & non lsd)

your mechanic could potentially rebuild your current trans using e150 parts, though.....
