Caution, MR2 Overheaters
Had problems with my 90 MR2 MK2 overheating and have done all the usual stuff - changed thermostat, bled, checked hoses etc. with no success. But yesterday, I decided to remove the thermostat, so I could use the car in an emergency, as my other main beast was off the road being repaired. Surprise, surprise, the thermostat had a pink wad of plastic trapped within its springs, and I can only imagine this is a seal that has been forced out of the therm and become caught in the mechanism. Obviously, not desirable, and would have meant that not only was the thermostat not working as it should have been, but (in extremis) the plastic could have become detached and found its way into the cooling system, blocking pipes and rad.
So the caution I give here is valid, and is one I have heard before from Toyota mechanics and one or two MR2 owners:
DO NOT USE CHEAP TOYOTA REPLACEMENT THERMOSTATS. BUY THE GENUINE ARTICLE. I opted for cheapo, because it was available in stock at a back-street parts store. And I paid the price. On further checking with Toyota, thermostats for MR2's change, not only by model, but sometimes BY ENGINE NUMBER, within the same model range - which means a thermostat that fits my specific MR2 may not be suitable for the same model, two months older, for example, and so on. Be warned!
