knocking and blue smoke

I just picked up a 86 mr2 that has a knock and blue smoke when you get on the gas. we checked the compression and 1 and 4 had 110 and 2 and 3 at 120. we found some brass shaving in the bottom of the oil pan. with the shavings i was thinking it was from a bearing? not real sure i've never torn into engines before. or?

think its valve knock just not sure at this point and dont know what to do next. The car has sat for 2 years and I was told it was valve knock and it sounded like it just wasn't sure with the smoke and the shavings in the pan.

Might try removing the spark plug wires one at a time with the engine on. If a rod bearing, the noise will quiet down when the problem cylinder wire is removed.

if you found bearing brass in the oil pan... and you have a knock you have a rod knock my friend... time to change your rod bearings... and while your at it i'd change the crank main bearings too...

is it misfiring too...? cause the blue smoke is most likely worn piston rings from piston slap due to much clearance in your rods...

so your prolly gonna have to do the entire bottom end...

It doesnt sound like it is missing. it idels pretty smooth I think. when my jeep was missing I could tell right away but this motor is alot smaller so im just not sure. I was thinking about getting the motor rebuilt just wanted to know what was wrong and if it was fixable. I wont be able to get to this until the weekend so i'll check it then.

a misfire in a 4 cylinder is much more noticeable than in a larger one... bigger engines will carry the dead cylinder and you might not even notice.

yea so... a new bottom end sounds like a for sure deal for you... good luck

I rebuilt the bottom end in my 89 with the block and crank in the car. it got rings and all new bearings. If you have never torn into an engine before this is a good one to learn on. they are simple. just make sure you have a manual for it.
