Head Removal

Was wondering if you guys might have any tips as to the simplest and fastest way to remove the head of a '91 MR2 3sgte. (least amount of parts removal to get the job done).
Also, what type bolts/size anchor the head to the block? Thanks

hmm

Looking forward to the answer on this one... I imagine Knightfall will either know something or spend some time looking for the right information... I would but I know nothing about the internals, or the way to remove the head... Good Luck

The manual has way too much listed to remove...

I never did one on a 3SGTE... but...

start valve cover, exhaust manifold... if you can't get to all the bolts your gonna have to remove turbo and anything in the way... cat converter bracket cause your going to need to push the manifold away from the head. same thing w/ intake... remove distributor and cams... now if you have no plans to reset timing you need to mark cam and distributor position as well as timing belt location. then remove them. if your going to redo the timing it doesn't matter. everything that bolts to the head has to come off.

your going to need a head gasket set... not just the gasket... your going to replace every gasket that you remove to get the head out. your going to need a new set of head bolts or stretch bolts. head bolts if i remember right are 15 mm...

this isn't that hard... timing and torque specs (you need to loosen and tighten in a certain order) are the only advanced level work required.
its a good 6-10 hour job depending on your level of expirtise and availability of tools.

theres two ways to do this... by the book and to wing it. even w/ my expierence i go step by step w/ a manual. whether i do every step or not i still follow and give myself the opportunity to make that decision instead of forgetting and skipping something all together.

i recommend buying a manual. its going to tell you loosening and tightening sequences w/ torque specs and even things to inspect for.
