surrender my mk1 to dmv?

Hello! It seems that my 86 mr2 would be too big a project for me so i am thinking about surrendering it to the DMV. Its too bad too cuz the interior is clean, the title is clean, etc. its just the head gasket is leaking oil into the coolant. MY father did this in early 2000 with another 80's car and got $1000 for it. Does anyone know how to go about doing this? i read the the DMV website and it mentions doing this when the car fails smog, so i think i may go to a smog shop tommorow and hopefully fail smog!!
i tried selling the car all this month and there are no takers, and i dont have the space for it. Well any help is appreciated thanks!!

by the way, i am in the bay area california in case different states have different dmv regulations.
