Ignition wiring problems

Here is the background: I bought a 91 N/A with about 100k miles on it, in pretty good condition. the only problem is that it has been sitting round for a while in NY. The car has some rust on it but nothing major, the body is fine. Anyway, one of the problems with the car is that there seems to be a short in the electrical wireing responsible for starting the car. I know the battery is fine, i know that for a fact. When i turn the ignition all the lights come on (on the dash) but when i turn the key to start the car nothing happens. The starter does not even click. The mechanic said it was the alternator, replaced that, and the car started fine (for a while), then yesterday it rained pretty hard and when i tried to start the car a few hours after the rain was over it had the same problem. So you tell me guys, what do you think? It seems like a short in the wireing between the ignition and the starter (becasue the starter does not even click or crank), but then how did the mechanic get it working for a while by replacing the alternator?

haha.... first time i ever heard of an alternator being in the starter circuit... you got a loose connection on the starter... most likely the ground side... check the connection to the starter and where is ground outs on the frame.

ok

Sounds to me like the typical discount auto parts alternator. Those peices of s__t never last longer than a month
