maybe I'm not phrasing right. I want to make some small upgrades. I will rebuild the motor sometime in the near future. My son has a probe gt. He wants to put in a klze j-spec engine. the only difference between the two is ecm, intake manifold, camshaft specs, and .5 points in cr, block is the same. Now a klze can be had for about $1000, but to do a rebuild using the klze parts would be considerably more than just buying a replacement and dropping it in. I want to know if the same holds true for this engine. I dont plan on going crazy, just want a mild HP increase and a newer motor.
there are more distinct differences but it depends on the generation.
gen 2 jdm has a different ecu, no egr, ceramic turbo (very small upgrades)
gen 3 has much better turbo, 540cc inj, better fuel rail, different intake manifold (huge upgrades)
i own a jdm gen 2 and have used usdm parts pretty routinely. can order anything at local toyota dealership. main difference i have seen so far is the 93 jdm uses the 9 bolt exhaust manifold that wasnt used here until 94 (iirc?).
gen 3 is more of a hassle but there are a number of dealerships that stock parts. try jay marks toyota in texas.

2nd gen -> 2nd gen... The power difference is due to a different turbo, emissions equipment and fuel maps. If your state has strict smog laws you will not be able to get away with running a JDM engine. The power difference is trivial if you plan on modifying your car. Although the JDM CT26 is much nicer to cruise around with IMO.
ishcoleobo, that was kinda the answer I was looking for. I live in NY. Emissions tests at present are on 1994 an newer vehicle so that really isnt an issue. I guess I will rebuild my usdm.
