Gen1 86 vs 87 brakes system

Is the 87+ brake upgrades really a upgrade? If you switch to bigger rotors from the 87, you still use the same calipers, and same brake pads right?? so it shouldn't matter what size rotor you put, The only advantage you would receive is as the rotor turns, the brake pad has less contact around the same spots, im not trying to be confusing but, since has a bigger radius and diameter, it gives more time for the friction on the rotor to cool off, BUT there would also be a disadvantage of more rotating weight. sorry if this question is stupid in anyway, i admit i only did 2 minutes of actual research. I gotta fix my brakes, but this upgrade seems pointless. and why would the 86 rotors warp just because of the size?

I talked to my rx7 friend about this, he said theres also a swap on rx7s similar to this, he says the bigger rotor gives the brakes better leverage. so i guess that one advantage.
