Gen1 First gen question

I have an 85 MR-2 and I was just wondering about the fan that is in the vent on the passanger side. I have never noticed mine being on. I did notice that I have a idiot light in the dash that says engine fan on it but I have never seen it lit after I start the car. What makes this fan turn on?

Also I have a tech question. My MR-2 is a 5 speed with cruse. Now my speedo cable is snaped so my cruse does not work but if I am driving down the highway and I have the gas pedel held at the same spot for a while my check engine light will come on. If I then floor it and let off a few time it goes away. Any ideas on what might cause that?

Do you have an Intercooler in that side vent? If so, thats what the fan is for. And you will prolly never "see " it on...

If he has a 85 mr2, it doesnt come supercharged stock, and if he did supercharge it, i know stock intercooler are located on top of the engine bay, i don't think they have a intercooler on the side. i think that fan is just to cool down the engine, i rarely seen my fan spin, the later models, i think 87+ have a duct from that vent to the intake in the trunk, where the intake was relocated in the later models.

as far as the light coming on, did you ever fiddle with the gauges?? i switch my speedometer, and not too long after that, it started doing the same thing, i never looked for the cause, probably should, but im too lazy.
